“George: We have adopted two and are in the process of adopting a third but none have been paired with a veteran yet. It takes 12 to 18 months for a dog to be fully trained and then to be given to a handler. Eddy (one of the adopted dogs) is in the “dating phase” where Shelter to Soldier is having him meet soldiers or veterans and pairing him. Once the dogs pair up and realize they are comparable with a vet, that’s when they start to move into the more permanent phases of adoption. Eddy will be paired in a few months. The last part of training is with the vet owner and can take another 6 to 8 months before they graduate.”
