A group of veterans are spearheading an effort to get full recognition for the heroic efforts of a comrade on a secret mission during the Korean War 64 years ago.

Members of American Legion Post 416 in Encinitas hosted a fundraiser several weeks ago in honor of retired Navy Capt. E. Royce Williams, a fighter pilot known as “The Forgotten Hero of the Forgotten War.”

Williams, an Escondido resident, told the veterans group his story of shooting down four Russian MiG-15s in a 35-minute mid-air battle during a 7 on 1 encounter that has been considered top secret for more than half a century.

“Williams told us that he met with President Eisenhower after the fierce engagement and did not mention the topic to the president,” said Mary Jane Fisher, the post’s public relations officer.

Williams was an F9F-5 Panther pilot with VF-781 Pacemakers on board the aircraft carrier USS Oriskany when he embarked on the mission in Nov. 18, 1952.

Retired Rear Adm. Doniphan Shelton is leading the effort to have Williams fully recognized for his heroism. Shelton has initiated a re-review through Rep. Duncan Hunter’s office along with two four star admirals’ endorsements.

Supporters are on a nationwide campaign to gather 100,000 signatures to petition a re-review for Williams’ recognition.
